Steve Kleusner made a presentation on the water system improvements that will remove radium from the City drinking water in accordance with a USEPA mandate. The improvements require the installation of a tower exceeding the height ordinance by about 14 feet. The tower is used to aerate water to begin the radium removal process. Without the variance the City would be required to build a new water storage tank in a new location to allow to the aeration tower construction at considerable redundant cost of tax dollars. Sam Tobias presented a copy of a “Determination of No Hazard to Air Navigation” from the FAA dated 04/22/2007. The determination is the FAA’s approval of the aeration tower at the height requested by the City. The tower according to the FAA will have no adverse impact on airport operations. (Packet of presentation materials attached to the minutes).
The City has no alternate locations to install the radium stripping system for the southwest part of the City without a very large additional expense. There will be no future need to increase the tower height.
Motion to approve the height variance by Wehner with a second by Berger. Unanimously approved.
Motion by Laper, second by Wehner to adjourn at 6:30 p.m. Unanimously approved.
