Preparedness
Have a Plan: It is important to prepare in advance of a disaster. Knowing what you will do, where you will go, and how to reconnect with family are all elements of this plan. Include things such as emergency contacts, evacuation routes, and where you will meet if you become separated as a result of the disaster.
Make a Kit: Make sure you have adequate supplies in the event you become stranded in your home. Basic services such as electricity, water and other utilities may not be available. You will need things such as water to drink, non-perishable food, including items that do not need to be cooked as appliances may not be functioning. Have a battery powered radio and flashlight along with first aid supplies. Remember the needs may vary for groups such as infants and the elderly so other items may be needed.
Be informed: Have a source for emergency information. NOAA All-Hazards Radios are an excellent source of emergency messaging and are available at many locations. They provide broadcasts on weather and other emergency information during a disaster and can provide timely warnings to help you stay safe. Use other sources such as local radio and TV stations along with websites and cellphone applications.
