  • Serves adults with disabilities ages 18 to 59.

Benefit specialist help older adults and people with disabilities with questions and problems related to benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, FoodShare and Health Insurance.

What can the Disability Benefit specialist do for you?

  • Provide accurate information about a wide variety of programs that cover healthcare, food and other household expenses
  • Help you to identify and apply for programs that will best meet your needs
  • Help with an appeal when eligibility or coverage is denied
  • Advocate on your behalf with other parties
  • Refer you to an appropriate attorney when necessary

  • Serves adults age 60 or older.

Each year, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Medicare prescription drug coverage for the following year. It is important to review your Part D plan enrollment yearly.

Who should seek help from a Elder Benefit Specialist?

  • Older persons who want to know more about any private or public benefit, older persons who need help in organizing the paperwork to apply for benefits, older persons who have been denied a benefit that they think they are entitled to receive.

What can Elder Benefit Specialists do?

  • An Elder Benefit Specialist offers information, advice, and assistance to older individuals 60 or more years of age regarding individual eligibility for, public benefits and services, such as Food Share, Medicaid & Medical cost savings.  They also work in areas related to Medicare, SSA benefits, housing, and other financial and consumer concerns.

What does the Elder Benefits Specialist service cost?

  • The program is supported with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the Federal Older Americans Act. There is no charge for the service, but the persons assisted by the program are welcome to make a contribution. Services will not be refused or limited in any way if no contribution is made. Services are provided directly by the Fond du Lac County Department of Senior Services. All donated funds will be used to expand the program.

As of November 1, 2025, the heat shut off moratorium is in effect and will run through April 15, 2026. During this moratorium, no utility company may disconnect a customer's heat for failure to pay their bill.

*Note that this only extends to electricity if the customer has electric heat or uses electricity to push heat through their home.
